I agree with another comment posted. It was just so completely UN- Star-Trek like that I couldn't wait to finish it and get back to one that really was. Spock and Chapel are out in deep space aboard a shuttle with "Dax" a female medical client of Chapel who is now, "doctor" Chapel. The entire book is overkill on how she is no longer the pretty and subservient nurse of TOS fame. She is now her own person (which in and of itself is fine) but she almost seems bitter about her past role, as if her sometimes grumpy mein in this novella is justified to atone for being too non-PC in the past. It seems they (Spock, Chapel and their patient) are being relentlessly pursued by pirates... in the close confines of this shuttle, almost the entirety of the story unfolds with all sorts of rehashing of Chapels old crushes on Spock and how "silly" she felt for that now, and Spock suddenly opening up to her in a manner one would have thought strange even were it Kirk he was speaking to. Then when she assumes the role of "captain" Chapel, and starts throwing orders around (since it is a medical mission Spock elevates her to command, and dutifully does as he's told)-- I won't get into how it closes out; but for my taste, this just isn't the Nurse Chapel (or Doctor--whatever!) that I was so fond of in TOS-- this was a woman who seemed she had something to prove and was, at times, obsessive about it. Not a ST-TOS novel I enjoyed much at all. Some of the more "progressive" ST fans who don't mind the old series characters "evolving" practically into someone they never knew--might like it; but definitely not this hard-core TOS Trekkie's cup of tea. I am anxious to get to the next one--it already has my interest piqued!Product details

I found it to be a quaint story about Chapel. Some of the other reviewers I think were a bit harsh about it. It's a short story more in line with the current "Short Treks" on CBS All Access. I'm a fan of TOS and DS9, especially the Dax character, which is what drew my attention. There's very little about Audrid Dax though and the focus is more on Doctor/Captain Chapel. It's not a bad read though...
Let me just say up front I love me (and know me) some Chapel. So, I'm actually both an easy sell (because she's been massively under-served in the books in my opinion) and a hard sell (because I have my own version--well, many versions of her if you consider all the fanfic I've written of her over the years--and I don't always find other people's version of her easy to swallow). Both sides of me--the easy sell and the hard sell--are ecstatic over this story. It's respectful to Chapel as both a scientist/doctor and a Starfleet officer, it has a lovely take on her relationship with Spock, and there's a freakin' Trill in it!! It's a fun, fast-moving, well-written story, with dialogue that made me grin, genuinely suspenseful moments, and a wonderful, wonderful ending (and endings can be hard to do right). I know the author and this story just could not have been in better hands! I hope he does more with her. Well played, Mr. Pearson! Well played.
Six months after the events of Star Trek The Motion Picture, Doctor Chapel being asked to help the Trill Ambassador Dax on a shuttle trip to a Trill ship that will be able to deal with their special needs. Through out this adventure we see that Spock is still thinking about his dealings with V'Ger and weather or not he wants to stay aboard the Enterprise. But when it comes to Doctor Chapel she finds out about the Trill special needs and vows to keep silent as well as makes a choice that will lead her to the position that we see her in Star Trek IV The Voyage Home. This story also would fit well into the anthology the Lives of Dax and I do recommend it for every Star Trek fan.
okay, first off, I've been a Spock/Chapel fan since like 1973 when I first watched the series in reruns. So, I bought the book as soon as I read the word Dr. Christine Chapel. She is a strong character that has been mostly ignored in the Trek universe and while I found Pearson's characterization of her pretty good, better than most not as good as a couple, I found that Spock's character was quite off. I can see them on a mission of this sort together--lord knows I've written enough fanfic with the same premise--but he acts and reacts to her in what I would consider a non-Spockian way. However, because the time is set post V'Ger you can give allowances to his unstable psychological state. Still, I cannot see him purposely requesting a mission to speak to her regarding a relationship that he never acknowledged existed in the first place. I also don't quite buy the whole Chapel as captain deal.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS SO READ ON WITH CAUTION I would have liked to have seen this as a segment of a larger work. Perhaps expanded it so that there is action aboard the Enterprise/Trill ship as well. They couldn't get clean clothes, I mean, really? Have Chapel and Spock interact off the shuttle even though she's decided to leave the ship she's still got some time to go. He could have let the end linger a little bit. Not that it requires a full blown sex scene but have them become more comfortable with each other before Chapel can't help herself and kisses Spock. Have Kirk and McCoy notice that they are more comfortable with each other or they spend more off duty time together just talking like friends and comrades. They could then discuss their history. The time on the shuttle could have been more straight duty/work, although Spock is just sort of sitting there punching buttons. Perhaps make Spock--as a touch telepath--the person who has to help Audrid Dax and that would make Chapel have to actually steer/command the shuttle. We all know how Spock likes to immerse himself in his mind melds. So, I'm giving it a 4 star because well, it's Chapel and Spock together, but it could have been better, and I would place this in the category of fanfiction not serious Trek.
